Fire department relocates to Abdissenbos
The relocation of the Stadshart fire station to Abdissenbos is not going ahead. The fire department will remain in the barracks at Brusselstraat in the Stadshart. Mayor Bezuijen announced this to the City Council on July 7, 2023.
Excessive costs
The tender for the barracks has been completed and the intended contractor has prepared a cost estimate. Due to extremely increased construction costs, the total investment cost is 12.2 million euros. This is 3.5 million euros higher than the available budget. The budget overrun is so great that a new tender would also have to be done.
Renovation barracks City Heart
In consultation with the Haaglanden Safety Region, the college decided not to move the fire station to the Abdissenbos, but to renovate and make the existing station at Brusselstraat more sustainable.
Participation
Through a participatory process, local residents of the Abdissenbos, Alferbos, Belvédèrebos, Fonteinbos, Haagsebos and Laveibos were informed and involved in the arrival of the new fire station in their neighborhood.
On Feb. 2, 2022, there was an online meeting for local residents during which Mayor Bezuijen and Lucien Groenewegen, Director of Fire Services at the Haaglanden Safety Region, explained the relocation of the fire department. The architect presented the preliminary design of the building. There were also explanations about topics such as the adjustment of the traffic situation, parking, noise, the next steps and the planning. View the presentation given and the report.
During the first meeting it appeared that some residents still assumed that the exit would be directly on Afrikaweg. In the initial phase of the project, this was indeed investigated, but there were several arguments as to why the preliminary design still chose to turn out via Abdissenbos and Meerzichtlaan.
Now that it has been decided that the fire department will not move to Abdissenbos, the participation process will not be followed up.
