Maintenance needed on Nelson Mandela Bridge escalators
Maintenance on the escalators on the Nelson Mandela Bridge will begin on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025. The work will be done in parts. Schedule:
- Monday, Nov. 17 and Tuesday, Nov. 18: North escalator up (high side) at Children of Versteeg Square closed
- Wednesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 20: North escalator down (high side) at Children of Versteeg Square closed
- Monday, Nov. 24 and Tuesday, Nov. 25: South escalator up (low side) at United Nations Square closed
- Wednesday, Nov. 26 and Tuesday, Nov. 27: South escalator down (low side) at United Nations Square closed
During the work, the escalators will not operate. However, you can take the elevator up the Mandela Bridge.
Future Nelson Mandela Bridge
Update November 3, 2025
The college sent a council proposal with a new plan for the station area to the City Council in July 2025. The proposal in it was to renovate the Nelson Mandela Bridge. However, the City Council decided in September 2025 that they did not yet consider this council proposal ripe for decision. First, the college will meet with the City Council to discuss desires, concerns and issues surrounding the project. Then the council will present which variants for the layout of the station area are possible and what this means in terms of time and money. Ultimately, one or two preferred variants will form the basis for a new council proposal in 2026. As soon as more is known you will read about it on this page.

Work winter 2022/2023
After being closed for 55 days, the Nelson Mandela Bridge has been open to pedestrians and cyclists since 26 January 2023. The Zoetermeer railway station and the Driemanspolder RandstadRail stop are also back in use. The bridge was closed due to work to make the bridge structurally safe. An important moment was the replacement of the bridge section above the A12 motorway on 29 December 2022.
