On July 1, 1863, slavery was abolished in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles. Since then, the Slavery Past has been remembered and celebrated in the Netherlands on this day.
Would you like to make your voice heard and contribute to the commemoration of one of the most far-reaching chapters in world history? Then this is your chance to actively participate in thinking about how we in Zoetermeer can commemorate the colonial and slavery past in a meaningful way. Together we can give our shared history a place and build a valuable future of respect, awareness and connection.
Based on a motion in 2023, the municipality of Zoetermeer commissioned a survey to identify the community's views on the commemoration and celebration of Keti Koti. Based on the findings of this research, the municipality supports the establishment of a dignified commemoration of the colonial and slavery past that suits the city and its residents. Therefore, the municipality is looking for:
Four Members Slavery History Committee
The Committee on the History of Slavery develops plans for, and advises the municipality on, how to commemorate and celebrate Keti Koti in the city. The Committee fulfills an important representative role annually on and around July 1. These include:
- The organization of an annual commemoration and celebration which meets the needs of the community of descendants.
- A venue for remembrance and celebration.
- An appropriate monument and a location thereof.
About the position
The Committee meets a minimum of 6 times a year. Members are appointed for a term of 3 years, with the possibility of reappointment.
In addition to providing advice, the Committee may undertake initiation and implementation activities, taking into account the municipality's Multi-Year Vision of Diversity and Inclusion.

- want to feel representative of the group of descendants.
- Are residents of the municipality of Zoetermeer.
