The Week Against Loneliness (Sept. 25-Oct. 1) focuses on meeting and connecting. Throughout the country during the Week against Loneliness there is extra attention for the theme of loneliness and social isolation. Also in Zoetermeer there are special activities where people can meet each other and make new contacts. Everyone can participate in the Week against Loneliness because tackling loneliness starts with making contact.

Interview with councilwoman Véronique Frinking

Why is the Week Against Loneliness important to you as an alderman?

"We need each other! Not just for sociability, but especially in difficult moments. If no one is there then, loneliness can strike quickly. That is why meetings and a personal network are so important. Attention for each other, meeting and connecting are central to this week of activities. Of course, looking out for each other does not stop after this week. It is important to keep doing this 365 days a year."

Why is naming and discussing loneliness essential?

"It is and remains important to make and keep loneliness a topic of discussion. Having an eye for each other starts with being aware of what someone needs and actually wanting to give that. Discussing loneliness can also prevent people from developing physical and mental symptoms. By opening up the conversation about loneliness, seeking and offering connection becomes easier."

What message do you want to convey to residents, organizations and volunteers?

"Looking out for each other is also in the little things. An extra chair at the table, a meal, a chat at the supermarket actually anything is possible. I grant that to everyone."

Do you have tips for residents who are lonely or know people who are lonely?

"Don't give up too quickly. Sometimes it can take a little longer for people to go somewhere with you. If you haven't been out for a long time then the threshold for social contact can be high. So have some patience with each other."

Tips for meeting people

Everyone needs contact, to feel welcome, to belong somewhere or to do fun things together. But what that need looks like varies from person to person. In Zoetermeer there are many opportunities to meet others.

  • On the neighborhood websites you can find activities in your own neighborhood: www.zoetermeer.nl/wijken.
  • Do you enjoy eating together? In Zoetermeer, there are many pleasant meals for a small amount of money. You get a healthy meal and meet new people, also close to home. On the Eating & Meeting map you can see where you can join: www.zoetermeer.nl/eten-en-ontmoeten-in-uw-wijk
