Driver's license, renew online
Do you want to renew your driver's license, have a category added or apply for a reissuance after invalidation? The RDW now allows you to do this online.

What to do
Roadmap for applying for renewal of your driver's license online:
Step 1. Does your phone have an NFC reader?
- Check if your Android smartphone has an NFC reader.
- You can check this on the overview NFC phones.
- Does your phone not have an NFC reader? Unfortunately, you cannot renew your driver's license online. You must arrange this at the City Hall counter. See product Driver's license.
Step 2. Download and install the DigiD app.
- You will need the DigiD appon your smartphone
which has a one-time check of your ID (ID check). - Don't have the DigiD app on your phone yet? Then you need to install it first. A handy step-by-step plan can be found on the DigiD website.
Step 3. Have passport photo taken
- You will be notified by the RDW that your driver's license has expired and that you need to apply for a new license.
- You go to an RDW approved photographer or photo booth*.
- At the photographer, have a digital passport photo taken of yourself.
- The photographer sends the passport photo, along with your driver's license number and your signature to the RDW for verification. You must provide your e-mail address when doing so.
- The RDW checks the photo and your signature.
- You will receive an e-mail from the RDW confirming that your photo has been approved and that you can apply for your driver's license online.

Step 4. Apply for driver's license online
- You apply for your driver's license online at the RDW through Driver's license application.
- You will enter a DigiD screen where you log in with your DigiD app. Haven't downloaded the DigiD app yet and/or haven't checked with your ID yet? Then visit the DigiD website for more information.
- You pay online via IDEAL and specify where you want to pick up the new driver's license.
- You will receive an email from the RDW confirming that your new driver's license is being made.
Step 5. Picking up the new driver's license
- The RDW will send you a message 2 working days after your application that your new driver's license is ready and can be picked up.
- To pick up your driver's license, you have 2 choices:
- Stop by Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You must check in with hostess/host at the City Hall Forum. Please note! This is only possible to pick up a driver's license that has been applied for online through the RDW.
- Or make an appointment online to pick up driver's license.
- When picking up your driver's license, you must bring a valid ID.
- Notice! You must pick up a requested driver's license within 3 months. Otherwise, it will be destroyed.

Additional information
Validity
A new driver's license is valid for 10 years. There are some exceptions:
- Driver's license for truck or bus > 5 years valid.
- You are between 65 and 70 years of age > driver's license valid until 75th birthday.
- You are over 70 years old > driver's license valid for 5 years.
- You have been medically examined because of a physical or mental impairment > valid for less than 10 years, until you are fit to drive again.
