Zoetermeer station area proposal: Repair Nelson Mandela Bridge and new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over A12

Zoetermeer has a new plan for the future of the station area. The college proposes to the city council to renovate the Nelson Mandela Bridge. In addition, a new bicycle and pedestrian connection should link the Entrance Area with Rokkeveen. Contrary to earlier plans, the Centrum West bus station will not be moved to Zoetermeer Station.

Repair Nelson Mandela Bridge

The Nelson Mandela Bridge is a crucial connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Rokkeveen and the center of Zoetermeer. Research into the condition of the bridge in 2022 showed that it was necessary to take drastic emergency measures. If the City Council approves the proposal, the college will start preparing for a thorough renovation. An implementation plan for strengthening the supporting structure is being worked on. For the canopy, we will see if it can be repaired, or if a new design is needed. The redesign of access and forecourt on both sides of the bridge and the technical installations, such as the elevators, are being examined. This renovation should not only ensure safety, but also contribute to a pleasant and accessible station environment.

New bicycle and pedestrian bridge

In addition to retaining the Nelson Mandela Bridge, there will be a new connection for slow traffic. The bicycle and pedestrian viaduct will run parallel to the Afrikaweg and form a direct and safe route across the A12, the rails and the Zuidweg. The connection connects to the regional bicycle network and contributes to the accessibility between the neighborhoods north of the A12 and Rokkeveen. The main bicycle route is over the new viaduct and no longer via the Nelson Mandela Bridge. The new bridge is also an alternative for people with disabilities to cross the A12 and the tracks when the Nelson Mandela Bridge elevators are out of use.

No bus station above A12

Previous plans envisioned a bus station above the A12, replacing the current Center West bus station. Recent studies and discussions with transportation partners indicate that this relocation is technically complicated and offers little added value. The current bus station is functioning well and will therefore be retained.

Follow-up

With this proposal, the college is asking the city council to agree to the new course and to release a preparation budget of 1 million euros. This amount will be covered from the Zoetermeer 2040 Fund and is intended for the preparation of an urban and civil engineering design. The City Council is expected to discuss the proposal in September 2025.

The implementation of the plans is an important step in the development of a future-proof station area ready for the growth of the city and the mobility of tomorrow. To develop the plans, the college is requesting a preparation budget of 1 million euros.
