Afrikaweg is changing from a through traffic road into a pleasant city street where cars drive slower and where people live, work, move and stay. Pedestrians can cross the Afrikaweg at ground level in a number of places. Cyclists can use the three existing underpasses. In this way, Meerzicht and Driemanspolder will be connected for slow traffic via an attractive and socially safe area.
The speed limit on the Afrikaweg will be reduced from 70 to 50 km/h. The existing road and bus lanes will be retained, but the lanes will be narrowed slightly and there will be greenery along the lanes. Raised green verges will help reduce traffic noise. In addition, some intersections will be modified to improve traffic flow. New intelligent traffic control systems may also have a positive effect, such as the introduction of a green wave.
Traffic flow on the new Stadsstraat Afrikaweg in 2030 has been studied. An increase in the number of households was taken into account. Two traffic simulations show the future traffic situation in the morning peak hour and the evening peak hour with the proposed modifications to Afrikaweg. The first intersection is the Afrikaweg - Van Leeuwenhoeklaan, the second is the Afrikaweg - Meerzichtlaan and the third the slip roads A12 - Afrikaweg.
Moreover, in Entrance, there is a strong commitment to reducing car use by encouraging the use of public transportation, cycling and travel on foot. A good connection from the station to downtown will be constructed along the city street.
