Renouncing Dutch nationality

Do you want to renounce your Dutch nationality? Then you can make a declaration at the municipality. By doing so, you relinquish the right to a Dutch passport. If you renounce Dutch citizenship, your minor children will also lose Dutch citizenship, unless your partner retains Dutch citizenship.

Do you want to continue living in the Netherlands after you have renounced your Dutch nationality? If so, you are required to apply for a residence document from the IND if you are not an EU citizen.

You can only waive if:

  • You are of age.
  • You have dual citizenship.
Making a statement

Do you want to make the statement? Then you must make an appointment (see "Making an appointment").

  • A waiver must be made in person . Only if physical or mental causes make it impossible for you to come, can you authorize someone to make the declaration on your behalf.
  • The municipality checks the statement you make and determines whether your statement has legal effect.
  • Does your declaration result in a change of nationality? Then this will be updated in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP).
