Renouncing Dutch nationality

Do you want to renounce your Dutch nationality? Then you can make a declaration at the municipality. By doing so, you give up the right to a Dutch passport. If you renounce your Dutch nationality, you will lose your minor children also have Dutch nationality, unless your partner retains Dutch nationality.

Do you want to continue living in the Netherlands after you have renounced your Dutch nationality? Then you are obliged to apply for a residence document at the IND if you are not an EU citizen.

You can only renounce if:

  • You are of legal age.
  • You have dual nationality.

Make a statement

If you wish to make the statement, you must make an appointment (see 'Making an appointment').

  • A waiver must be made in person . Only if you are unable to attend due to physical or psychological reasons, you can authorize someone to make the declaration on your behalf.
  • The municipality checks the declaration you have made and determines whether your declaration has legal consequences.
  • Does your declaration lead to a change in nationality? This will be adjusted in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP).

What you need to bring

  • a valid ID
  • all travel documents in your possession
  • proof that you have another nationality in addition to Dutch nationality
