Based on the Heritage Regulation Zoetermeer, it is prohibited to disturb the soil in the archaeological monuments deeper than 50 cm below the surface without permission. The 'disturber' of the soil is obliged to have an investigation carried out into archaeological values. This starts with a desk study and an inventory field study. Depending on the results, further investigations may follow in the form of an excavation of (parts of) the site.

The research must be carried out by a professional archaeological consultancy. The municipality can make it mandatory that the Archeological Working Group Zoetermeer assists in the work. The Working Group consists of amateur archaeologists and can therefore not conduct research independently.
