Residents freshen up neighborhood during NLdoet

Saturday, March 15, residents of Palenstein participated in the national action NLdoet. Not only the community garden the 'Ambachtsheerlijkheid' but also the surroundings of the Palenstein neighborhood got a major makeover.

In addition to "dredging" the gully, picking up litter and maintaining the garden, the emphasis this time was on picking up cigarette butts. Each raper was given his or her own plastic bag to save cigarette butts separately. Residents were shocked at what could be picked up in 1 hour. "Research by the University of Groningen has shown, among other things, that 1 cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1,000 liters of groundwater with heavy metals, nicotine and micro-plastics, and that the substances released also affect the growth of plants and the DNA material of organisms. What an impact on the environment!" said one of the residents.

It was a festive afternoon with home-baked pancakes and other delicious snacks and entertaining stories and experiences. District alderman Ronald Weerwag and interested city council members stopped by to experience what is going on in the neighborhood and to see for themselves how hard residents work for their environment.
