Cyber Security Month October: entrepreneurs tell how they overcame a hack

October is Cyber Security Month. This month is all about awareness, smart choices and learning from each other. Because cybercrime does not only affect large companies. SMEs, self-employed workers and family businesses in particular are increasingly being targeted.

Therefore, this month we share 4 real stories from entrepreneurs who themselves became victims of cybercrime. They tell what went wrong, what the consequences were and what they have been doing differently since. From a catering company with a hacked website to a technical service provider that had to deal with a ransomware attack in the middle of the weekend. From a stolen identity to 1.5 tons of damage from a weak password.

Why we do this

Cybersecurity begins with awareness. By opening the conversation, we can learn from each other. The entrepreneurs in this campaign show that mistakes are human, but also that you can come out of them stronger. So keep an eye on our channels and read a new story every week.

Story by Frans van Hall

This week we are pleased to share the story of hospitality entrepreneur Frans van Hall. Frans was hacked. His website went offline, and at first the damage seemed limited. But the impact on his business was huge:

  • Less visibility in search engines
  • Much time spent on recovery
  • Checked all suppliers again

In his story, Frans shares what went wrong as well as what he does differently now. His most important lesson? With any IT vendor, ask first: what about security?
