Electricity grid in Zoetermeer to be expanded, municipality and Stedin work together
On Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, Maarten Bijl, South Holland Regional Director (Stedin) and Alderman Bouke Velzen (Zoetermeer municipality) signed the cooperation agreement for the expansion of transformer substations in Zoetermeer.
Stedin and the municipality of Zoetermeer are going to work together intensively to expand the electricity grid because of the increasing demand for electricity. This growth will continue in the coming years, mainly due to electric charging, heat pumps and gasless cooking. Stedin is therefore investing in new transformer houses, among other things. The municipality and Stedin agree to work together to find suitable locations for these houses, taking into account the impact on the electricity grid and minimum inconvenience to residents.
Investing in the power grid
There are currently some 634 transformer houses in Zoetermeer; about 112 more will need to be built in the coming years. Transformer houses ensure that electricity in the neighborhood can be transported to homes. About 1 in 3 streets will be opened up for the power lines to be laid. A huge operation that will affect everyone. Thanks to these investments in the electricity grid, households and businesses can (continue to) heat their homes and premises with a heat pump, charge their electric cars, cook without gas and feed back their solar energy.
Neighborhood approach to finding a suitable location
When looking for suitable locations for transformer houses, Stedin and the municipality agree that a neighborhood will be addressed all at once.
Alderman Bouke Velzen: "I am pleased that we confirm the good cooperation with this agreement. Placing more transformer houses is an important step to reduce the overload of the electricity grid. This way we will continue to provide our residents with power in the future."
"It is incredibly important that grid operator and municipality work together to expand the electricity grid. Space is very scarce, so you have to find it together. And we also want to minimize the inconvenience to citizens," says Maarten Bijl, regional director for South Holland at Stedin.
