Exhibition 'Poop yes, trash no in our sewers' at Zoetermeer Forum Library

On December 1, Alderman Marijke van der Meer opened the exhibition 'Poop yes, trash no in our sewers' at the Forum Zoetermeer Library. With this exhibition, the municipality of Zoetermeer wants to make residents aware of what does and does not belong in the sewers in order to reduce the number of sewer blockages in our city.

Extra attention during holidays

Alderman Van der Meer: "Every year during the holidays, we see a spike in the number of blockages. After all the cooking, gourmet meals, and baking doughnuts, many people rinse their used grease down the sink or toilet. This causes problems in the sewer system. With this exhibition, we want to show how blockages occur and how you can easily prevent them—namely, by collecting grease in a plastic bottle and taking it to a collection point at the supermarket or the self-service depot. Fewer blockages mean less repair work. That saves money and ensures that sewerage charges do not have to increase further."

Decline

For the past year, a campaign has been running to spread the message 'Poop yes, rubbish no in our sewers'. During this period, there has been a decrease in the number of blockages, which is good news. "If everyone does their bit, we will all benefit. To ensure that the number of blockages continues to decline, we are continuing the campaign. The opening of this exhibition marks the next step," said Alderman Van der Meer. The exhibition can be visited throughout December in the library on Stadhuisplein.
