Error amount fee for polling station in 2024 income tax return

Did you work at a polling station as a chairperson, member or counter in 2024 elections? If so, you received compensation. We must report these fees to the Internal Revenue Service and you will find the amount on your income tax return. Unfortunately, in the 2024 assessment, the Tax Office made an error in some cases and the assessment does not show the correct amount.

What's going on?

We have forwarded the fees from the 2024 election to the Internal Revenue Service. The Inland Revenue automatically enters the amount on the income tax return under the heading 'Income from Other Work: Other Income: ROW Municipality of Zoetermeer'. In the 2024 assessment, the Inland Revenue entered an amount that was too high. Or they entered an amount when you did not help in the 2024 election.

How is it that the amount is too high?

The IRS has processed the fees from the 2024 election. But it also added the fees from the April 2023 election. This is not allowed. You already declared this amount on your 2023 income tax.

What do we do?

We are in talks with the tax authorities. We are trying to come to a solution. We assume that the IRS will no longer automatically adjust the amount, which you now see on your income tax return.

What to do if the amount is too high?

You can reduce the amount yourself in the tax return. We sent a letter after the election to all people who received a 2024 allowance stating the amount we passed on to the IRS. This is the correct amount. Please keep the letter safe and keep a copy of this notice. Should the IRS approach you, you will have enough evidence to show that the earlier amount is incorrect. If you no longer have the letter, email verkiezingen@zoetermeer.nl.

What do you do if you did not help with the 2024 election and you see an amount listed?

Then you did not receive a letter before 2024 from us. You can adjust the amount on the return to €0.00. Then keep a copy of this notice well. Should the IRS approach you, you will have enough evidence to show that the earlier amount is incorrect.

How can you adjust the amount on the return?

You can adjust the amount under the heading Income from other work. You can ignore the notification you get when adjusting the amount.

What do you do if you have already sent the return?

Then you can edit the return and send it again. The IRS processes the last sent version that comes in before the deadline.
