Youth performance: When we lost ourselves

'What would drive me to madness? A thought he plays with. That snatches him out of time, that takes him over completely. That overpowers him.'

There is 80 years of freedom in the Netherlands. A moment to celebrate, but also to pause. Because that freedom was once not there. What does that past say about who we are today? What do we actually know about our family history? And what if it reveals something you would rather not have known?

In the performance, we meet Mees, a gym teacher. He delves into his family's wartime history. What he discovers turns his world upside down. Was his grandfather really the man he thought he was? His students observe him as he enters an inner storm. He doubts everything. What does this say about him? About his teaching? And what does he do when he finds himself in a war situation? Does he choose the right path? And how do you know which path is right. His students, watch, feel and talk with him.

A probing, musical performance where past and present intertwine. About silence, betrayal, forgiveness and the question of whether evil is hereditary.

Theater After the Dam

The performance is part of the youth projects of Theater Na de Dam. Under the initiative of this organization, more than one hundred performances related to the Second World War are playing throughout the Netherlands around the National Remembrance of the Dead. During the youth project, young people from Zoetermeer, under the guidance of a theater maker, go on a research into the history of Zoetermeer during the Second World War. This research is translated into a performance that the young people perform themselves.
