More for Meerzicht: New shopping center and housing on the way for a future-proof Heart of the District

On July 16, Alderman Véronique Frinking (health and welfare) and Messrs. M. van den Berg and W. de Ridder (Woonhave) signed the anterieure agreement (AOK) Hart van Meerzicht. The AOK lays down agreements on various matters for the realization of the development of the project in the cooperation between the municipality and the owner Woonhave.

With the signing of this agreement and the adoption of the plan execution framework (PUK) by the city council, the green light has been given for the first phase of the plans that not only meets the urgent housing need but also contributes to maintaining a vital shopping center and an attractive living environment. On behalf of the owners Woonhave and Portico, property developer CLS will work to further develop and realize the plan. A development that is badly needed and also widely supported by the neighborhood and its residents. In this way, a lively and future-proof neighborhood is being built together.

With this plan, the municipality of Zoetermeer is actively committed to improving public space and strengthening the Meerzicht neighborhood. The outdated shopping center will make way for a new future-proof shopping center, 86 homes in the middle rental category, catering facilities and an attractively designed square, where meeting people is central. There will also be room for a third supermarket, which will further increase the liveliness of the area.

This area development fits seamlessly with the broader "More for Meerzicht 2035" program, which focuses on 4 pillars:

  1. Future-proof building: there will be new housing for all target groups.
  2. A safe and livable neighborhood: the area becomes more attractive, safer and more accessible.
  3. Socioeconomically stronger: the new shopping center and square with catering establishments will make Meerzicht a place where people like to congregate again.
  4. A future-proof residential environment: greening, more space for pedestrians and cyclists and increased quality of public space.

Alderman Frinking: "With this step, we are giving Meerzicht the boost it needs. We are providing new housing, a new shopping center and a greener environment that offers more space to meet. It is good to see that the neighborhood itself is also positive about the plans and that together we can move them forward."

Planning

Demolition work is expected to begin in late 2025 with the goal of a renovated shopping center and housing in 2027.
