Name change surname

If you want to change your surname or that of your child, first check the Name Change brochure from Justis or this is possible. Justis is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security.

If your situation is listed in this brochure, you can submit a request for a name change to Justis.

Changing the surname of descendants of enslaved people

If you have ancestors who were enslaved, you may have a surname that refers to this past. As of July 1, 2024, it is possible to apply to change the surname for that reason.

What to do?

You will automatically be notified if your surname is changed. You will then receive an official extract of the Royal Decree.

Adjusting documents

  • If your last name has officially changed, then it must also be changed in your identity document. Therefore, apply for a new passport, identity card and/or driver's license.
  • Also make sure that you inform all authorities about your changed name. You do not need to inform the municipality separately. They will automatically receive an extract of the Royal Decree.

How long will it take?

You will receive a message from Justis within 20 weeks whether your surname will be changed. This may take longer if your application is incomplete.

Objecting

If you do not agree with the decision, you can appeal to Justis within 6 weeks.
