New children's mayor sought

The municipality of Zoetermeer is looking for a new children's mayor for the 2025-2026 school year. After a successful trial period with children's mayor Steff Hoevers, it has been decided to continue this special position. A unique opportunity for children from group 7 to make their voices heard and represent children in Zoetermeer.

Mayor Michel Bezuijen: "The children's mayor is a valuable link between the municipality and the youngest inhabitants of Zoetermeer. I think it's important that children feel heard and have a say in their city. Together with the children's mayor, we give children a voice and a face in Zoetermeer."

From trial to permanent position

In the 2024-2025 school year, the municipality first appointed a children's mayor as a pilot. The goal: to involve children in a low-threshold way in municipal events and introduce them to democratic values and civic participation. The trial went positively. The ceremonial role proved easy to implement, organizations actively requested the presence of the children's mayor, and residents appreciated the visible involvement of youth in the city. Although the main emphasis was on representation, substantive themes such as safety around schools and increased reading were also visibly taken up, including a book display and videos for the library and municipal campaigns. Based on these experiences, it was decided to continue the position structurally, with an annual election.

What does a children's mayor do?

The children's mayor represents the children of Zoetermeer and is present at all kinds of special moments in the city. These include the entry of St. Nicholas, King's Day, the 4th of May commemoration, the evening of lights and the mayor's breakfast. The children's mayor also opens events, makes short speeches and contributes ideas on subjects that children find important. Together with the mayor or aldermen, the children's mayor visits activities and regularly makes videos for social media to reach and involve other children.
