New children's mayor wanted!
The term of the children's mayor is almost over. Therefore, the mayor is looking for a new children's mayor.
What does the children's mayor do
A children's mayor gives children a voice within the municipality. The duties of the children's mayor include:
- Represent children in the municipality of Zoetermeer.
- Opening act at an opening or event.
- Give a talk at meetings and events.
- Being a listening ear for children when they have ideas for the congregation.
- You accompany the mayor or aldermen to activities and make visits;
- You enjoy talking about your activities. Together with the congregation, you make regular videos that can be seen on social media.
In short: As children's mayor, you have a special role. It includes fun and serious topics. Together with the mayor you will be present at the entry of Sinterklaas, evening of lights, King's Day, the 4th of May commemoration and the mayor's (school) breakfast.
I also want to be children's mayor, how do I register for the election?
Every (school) year Zoetermeer looks for a new children's mayor. After a call from us, in September, you can apply for school year 2025-2026 (November to November). You can only participate if:
- You live in Zoetermeer and go to school
- you are in grade 7
- you have enough time
- You are available for the entire (school) year
- your parents approve (discuss it with your parents)
What to do.
- Create a video of up to 1 minute.
- Tell us who you are, what you like and find important. And what you want to do for the children of Zoetermeer.
- Send your video (MP4 file or YouTube link) to kinderburgemeester@zoetermeer.nl by Oct. 17, 2025 .
- In the email, put your name, address and city, phone number, name of your school and contact information for one of your parents/guardians.
What happens after my registration?
A panel of judges will review all applications and select up to 10 nominees who will be allowed to make a pitch come the election. This will be held on Oct. 28, 2025. After that, the nominees will choose among themselves who will become the new children's mayor. Prior to the council meeting on Nov. 3, 2025, you will be installed. You will receive the chain of office and can then really get to work!

Last year, Steff Hoevers was children's mayor of Zoetermeer.
