Appropriate education and special education

Extra support or special (basic) education?

Children attend elementary school, if possible. Some children with disabilities (physical or mental) need extra help with this. Appropriate education means that schools must ensure that children receive education that suits them best. Schools help children who need extra guidance. If this is not possible, special education comes into the picture.

My child attends primary school

All elementary schools have money for extra assistance for all students. The elementary school and the special school work together to see if and how extra knowledge or care can be used. You can find out what guidance a school can offer on the school's website.

For children who need more support than the elementary school can provide, there is special primary education (SBO) or special education (SO). For more information, visit the Zoetermeer Collaborative Partnership website .

My child goes to secondary school

In secondary education, every school has a care team. The care team consists of permanent participants such as the school's care coordinator, the school social worker and the education and care supervisor. By invitation, the compulsory education officer, the Youth and Family Support worker or a youth nurse may also join a consultation. If a student needs more guidance, the care team can provide advice or an offer of help. More information about this can be found on the school website.

Does your child need more support to get an education than the school can provide? Then your child can attend secondary special education (VSO). For more information, visit the website of the Zoetermeer Partnership.

From primary to special (primary) education

If your child is going to special education, discuss this with the school. The school will then contact the appropriate people. Within six to ten school weeks, the Zoetermeer Collaborative Association (for primary and secondary education) will determine what support your child needs in order to attend school. If it appears that your child needs extra support, you will receive an admission statement (TLV). With this permit your child can attend special (primary) education. Together with the school you decide which school is best.

Special education is divided into 4 different groups. These groups are called clusters. Each cluster provides a type of help for children with disabilities.

  • Students who cannot see well (visual impairment).
  • Students who cannot hear or speak well (auditory and/or communicative impairment).
  • Students with physical, intellectual or multiple disabilities.
  • Students with social-emotional and/or multiple disabilities.

Do you have questions about school counseling or a complaint? If so, please contact the school administration or school board.
