Poplar forest Noord Aa in need of replacement
This fall, the poplar forest near the Zoetermeerse Plas, called Noord Aa by many, will be turned into a diverse forest. The forest contains mainly poplars that are a risk for unsafe situations due to breaking off branches. In 2019, the first poplars were replaced by other tree species. From the fall of 2025 through the spring of 2026, the next phase of work will be carried out.
Starting in late May, visitors to the forest may well notice markings on trees. This will be on trees in the purple area, as shown on the attached map. Trees with a dot will be removed, trees with a cross will be uprooted and left in the forest. Trees with a "folding chair" will be cut down to height. When carrying out the work, the animals and plants in the area will be carefully considered.
More species
The old trees will be replaced by different types of new trees. These are mainly trees that occur naturally in the Netherlands and suit the soil. This will make the forest more varied and this will provide more opportunities for plants and animals in the area.
Samenspraak
In March and April this year, contact was made with local residents, nature associations and other interested parties, among others. During a walk through the forest, they viewed the situation and the plans were explained by the municipality. The comments, thoughts, tips and ideas were included in the final planning.
