The City Council makes various decisions in meetings. Some of these decisions are referendable. This means that residents can submit a request to board of mayor and aldermen to hold an (advisory) referendum on a municipal council decision. That decision can then possibly be amended after the referendum.

What you need to know

  • Residents must first make a preliminary (introductory) request before a referendum can be initiated.
  • This request must be submitted to the municipality no later than 2 weeks after the publication of the council decision.
  • This preliminary petition must be supported by at least 300 to 350 residents of Zoetermeer. The exact number depends on the number of eligible voters at that time.
  • Has no request been submitted within 2 weeks? Then the decisions made take effect.

Submit request

You can make the request in 2 ways:

  • Online (see 'Arrange online')
  • You pick up a form in the Public Hall of City Hall.

After a preliminary or final referendum request has been submitted, subsequent requests received for the same council decision are considered statements of support.
