Remembering and celebrating together during Keti Koti in Zoetermeer

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Zoetermeer will mark an important moment in Dutch history: the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. During Keti Koti - which literally means 'broken chains' - we commemorate the suffering of the slavery past and celebrate freedom at the same time. A moment of reflection and connection that is meaningful for everyone in our city.

For and by Zoetermeerders

The event is organized by the newly established Slavery History Committee, with support from the Municipality of Zoetermeer. Everyone is welcome: young and old, from any background. Zoetermeer wants to be a city in which everyone can feel at home. Discrimination and exclusion are not part of this. That is why it is so important that we keep the conversation going, even when it is uncomfortable. Keti Koti is such a moment to reflect on the past and to look at what is still going on today.

The power of equality

Research and conversations in the city show that the history of slavery still permeates people's lives today. Discrimination and inequality are unfortunately not yet a thing of the past. Therefore, the commemoration of July 1 is not only historically important, but also topical. Emphasizing equality is and remains important in Dutch society. Young people in particular are encouraged to be proud of who they are, despite what others may lead them to believe.

Get involved and make a difference

Will you be there on July 1? Show that you stand for freedom, respect and connection. Bring family, neighbors and friends and experience this special evening together. This is how we build, step by step, an equal and inclusive Zoetermeer.
