Stronger together online: students and parents play HackShield quest with mayor
The official launch of the HackShield-'In De Wijk' pilot in Zoetermeer took place on Wednesday, November 12, at elementary school De Oostwijzer in Oosterheem.
HackShield In De Wijk is an interactive game that teaches children between the ages of 8 and 12 how to recognize and prevent online danger together with their (grand)parents. The municipality of Zoetermeer is using the program to work with schools, parents and children on digital resilience.
During the meeting, Mayor Michel Bezuijen gave the go-ahead for the campaign. Pupils from group 7, together with their family members, got to work on a special HackShield-question. Guided by the director of HackShield, they were given multiple choice questions about online safety and discussed together what the correct answer was. Then the children and parents filled out a worksheet, with the mayor engaging in a conversation with the students about their experiences online.
Mayor Michel Bezuijen: "Online safety starts with awareness. With HackShield, children learn in a fun way how to protect themselves and others online. The game is also a great opportunity for parents and children to start a conversation about digital safety."
In conclusion, the children received the booklet What the Hack!, which allows them to continue learning about the digital world in a fun way. Afterwards, there was room to talk afterward while enjoying a snack and a drink.
