Start Vitality Club in the Hole in the Marketplace
On Friday, September 13, Alderman Ronald Weerwag (sports) gave the go-ahead for the first Vitality Club in the Hole in the Market in Zoetermeer. The Vitality Club is a low-threshold exercise club where local residents aged 55 and older exercise together in the open air or public space.
Exercising together outdoors not only provides a more active and healthier lifestyle, it also increases the social network in the neighborhood and provides rhythm and structure. As a result, a Vitality Club often runs for years, because it is easier to keep up. At the Vitality Club one or more regular participants from the group take the lead as instructor. So the clubs are not guided by (paid) professionals. The exercises focus on overall fitness, muscle strength, balance and coordination and are partly performed with simple materials.
Ronald Weerwag: "I am happy with the arrival of a Vitality Club in Zoetermeer. People over 55 can exercise in an accessible way, regardless of experience or fitness level. It is a nice place to stay fit and active together in a relaxed and sociable way."
Low-threshold sports
Henriette Bos of JongSeniorenZoetermeer (JSZ) is committed to making the third stage of life as healthy and long as possible. "In that context, the municipality has asked us to think along in vital and mobile being/exercise activities, among other things. Based on its mission and vision, JSZ establishes and maintains contacts with various partners who also consider vital aging important. This is how we learned more about the Vitality Club in Leiden. A wonderful and successful example of fun exercise in an accessible way. So when the idea arose at the Hole in the Market to give 'exercise' a place there, JSZ brought the idea of the Vitality Club to our attention. It would be great if this will also happen in Zoetermeer."
Hole in the Market
Interested people are welcome to exercise every Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. under the guidance of a volunteer instructor in the Hole in the Market at Frankrijklaan/Engelandlaan in Zoetermeer. The exercises will be moderately intense and can be performed at any level. Participation is free, without obligation and at your own risk. Registration is not necessary. During the month of September, Vitality Club participants will be offered the first cup of coffee or tea for free at Café MAX.
About Vitality Clubs
Vitality Clubs are low-threshold and scientifically researched outdoor exercise clubs for and by older people. They are based on the research of Leiden aging professor David van Bodegom, affiliated with Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing. The Vitality Clubs operate on the basis of peer coaching, which means that someone from the group takes the lead during the exercise session. So the clubs are not supervised by paid professionals.
