Duties of polling station chairpeople and officials

Chairperson

As chairperson, you will be responsible for the running of the polling station in the municipality of Zoetermeer. You manage the 4 polling station officials and you are responsible for the voting process and counting in the evening. The chairperson is the contact person for the Elections team. The ideal chairperson is precise, customer-oriented, confident and can organize and lead.

Duties:

  • Chairpersons attend 2 trainings: an e-learning and a training VOX counting method, unless they have already attended them during the past election.
  • The morning chairperson will pick up the chairperson's bag and iPad at the municipality on Tuesday, October 28 (the day before Election Day) between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • The morning chairperson opens the polling station and checks that all items are in place (voting booths, ballot boxes, table and chairs, etc.).
  • Chairperons work according to legal rules and municipal explanations.
  • Chairpersons direct the officials of the polling station, they take care of the distribution of work.
  • They use the iPad in the way they learned in training.
  • Together with the polling officials, chairpersons ensure that the voting process is conducted according to the rules.
  • The morning chairperson is responsible for proper handover to the afternoon shift.
  • After 9 p.m., the presiding officers, together with polling officials, count the votes cast.
  • The noon chairperson is in charge of counting the votes.
  • The chairpersons together ensure that the official reports are completed correctly.
  • The presidents bring the completed minutes together to City Hall.

Polling station official

Anyone who is 18 years old on election day can become a polling station official. As a polling station member, you are co-responsible for the conduct of the polling station under the direction of the chairperson. You are customer-oriented, assertive, accurate and have a great sense of responsibility.

Duties:

  • officials take a mandatory e-learning course. You can take this online training from home at a time of your choosing.
  • Together with the chairperson, officials ensure that the voting process is conducted according to the rules.
  • When necessary, officials help move such things as voting booths, ballot boxes or tables.
  • An official checks documents of the voter (such as voting pass, proxy, ID).
  • An official gives the ballot to the voter.
  • An official counts voting passes, proxies and voter cards.
  • All officials will count the votes cast after 9 p.m. along with the chairpersons.
  • Officials help clean up the polling place at the end of election day.
