Update: Snowfall makes waste collection difficult
Due to the persistent snow, it is necessary to further reduce waste collection. Please note the following changes:
- Not all mini containers with residual waste that you put outside this week can be collected. Extra rounds will be made for this from Monday, January 12. If your bin has not been emptied this week, please put it outside from the 12th onwards.
- Organic waste and bulky items will not be collected until January 16.
- Residual waste in underground containers is collected where possible, but locations that are difficult to access, such as narrow streets, are skipped.
- The Christmas tree collection will be moved to Saturday, January 17.
Why collect less waste?
The snow makes narrow streets difficult to access. Skidding garbage trucks can cause a lot of damage to streets or, worse still, accidents. We must prevent this. In addition, heavy vehicles cause snow to turn into ice, making the roads even more slippery.
The collection of mini containers is becoming increasingly difficult due to the snow. Many containers are snowed in, making them almost impossible to move or causing the lids to freeze shut. This makes the work very labor-intensive. Waste collection employees are also driving gritting trucks through the city. Snow is being cleared and gritted from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and in order not to overburden our people, we are postponing waste collection. We understand that this is inconvenient and ask for your understanding.
What can you do?
- Separate paper/cardboard, plastic, smooth materials, and textiles properly so that you have less residual waste. This way, your residual waste container will fill up less quickly.
- Is your mini container completely full? Then temporarily store the waste in the shed or storage room.
- If necessary, move your container to a road that has been gritted. This will make it easier for vehicles to access it.
Would you like to help the collection service? Then you can clear the snow from the collection point for the mini containers. Also, remove the snow from the lids and open them once so that they do not remain frozen shut.
How to move forward?
The thaw is expected to return on Sunday or Monday. If this continues, we will start catching up on the backlog from Monday onwards. Please take extra care when going outside during the thaw. The temperature of the road surface may still be below freezing, which means it may still be slippery.
