There is bird flu again in the Netherlands and also in Zoetermeer. At the moment mainly in the area of the Benthuizerplas (Schansbaan, Vestingpad and surroundings). Dead birds are also being reported in other parts of Zoetermeer.

Bird flu can be contagious to humans, which is why the animal ambulance warns, "Never pick up a bird you suspect of bird flu, alive or dead! Below you can read what symptoms you can recognize in sick birds and what you can do.

Symptoms in suspected birds

The birds are behaving strangely. Visible symptoms may include:

  • apathetic behaviour
  • neurological/coordination problems
  • shivering head and neck
  • swimming or spinning in circles
  • crane with neck
  • snot/slime discharge beak/eyes
  • blue, enlarged eyes
  • excessive yawning/scratching seems to be an early stage
