School Garden Week: 'Every child well rooted'

From 19 to 23 May, everything was about muddy knees, green fingers and beaming faces: it was School Garden Week! The whole country celebrated how fun and educational school gardening is. Children playfully discover where their food comes from, learn to work together and enjoy everything that grows, blooms and tickles.

This year everything revolved around the root, under the motto: 'Every child well rooted'. A fitting theme, because in the school garden children literally and figuratively get the chance to put down strong roots - in the soil and in their development.

There was also enthusiastic participation in Zoetermeer. District alderman Ronald Weerwag visited the community garden on Zegwaartseweg. Together with the children of Language Class 2 of IKC De Kasteeltuin he sowed carrots. It was a cheerful morning full of curious questions, happy faces and dirty hands.

The Week of the School Garden is an initiative of the School Garden Alliance and Jong Leren Eten. Their mission? To give every child in the Netherlands the opportunity to experience their own school garden during primary school. A school garden is not just a piece of land. It is a place where children and nature grow together.
