Zoetermeer tackles nuisance from (electric) bikes

The municipality of Zoetermeer is going to enforce extra enforcement on the nuisance of (electric) bicycles, such as fatbikes. In various places in the city, speeding cyclists cause dangerous situations, especially in shopping streets, near schools and in shopping malls. Residents, business owners and parents are concerned about safety. These are not a few incidents, but a problem that affects several places in the city.

Additional enforcement and education

The municipality is already taking measures to reduce the nuisance. Police and enforcers carry out regular checks, but in the coming period additional enforcement will be carried out on violations by cyclists. Think of bicycles on the sidewalk or in pedestrian areas. Enforcement officers will hand out fines in areas of high nuisance, with extra attention to shopping areas and schools. In addition, efforts will be made to educate young people about safe and responsible cycling.

Mayor Michel Bezuijen: "The nuisance caused by (electric) bicycles in places where cycling is prohibited is a serious problem and creates unsafe situations. Addressing and warning is no longer enough. We will therefore enforce more strictly: those who do not follow the rules will be fined immediately."
