Zoetermeer starts preparations Heat Program

The municipality of Zoetermeer is starting to create a new plan: the Heat Program. This plan helps the city to stop using natural gas step by step. The Heat Program builds on the Heat Transition Vision from 2021. The program answers the questions: how far along are we in the transition to sustainable heat? In which neighborhoods will we be working over the next 10 years? What can residents, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders expect? And how can they participate?

Why this program?

All of the Netherlands is switching to renewable energy. Zoetermeer is participating in this as well. The Heat Program helps the municipality organize this change properly. The program is in line with national agreements such as the Climate Agreement, but also with local plans such as Zoetermeer 2040 and the Spatial Strategy.

What does this program mean for residents?

Residents will get clarity with this program on whether municipal activities will start in their neighborhood over the next 10 years for a sustainable and affordable alternative to natural gas.

Alderman for Energy Transition Bouke Velzen says: "We want to prepare Zoetermeer step by step for a future without natural gas. We are doing this carefully and together with our residents and businesses. The Heat Program helps us to make clear what is going to happen, when and why. By actively involving residents and businesses, we can take their ideas and concerns into account in the plans."

What is the schedule?

The preparation of the Heat Program takes about 2 years. In 2027, the College of B&W adopts the final Heat Program. After that, it will be re-evaluated and adjusted every 5 years.
