Zoetermeer wants faster public transport connection to Rotterdam

More and more people live, work and travel in Zoetermeer and the region. For years, a rapid public transport (ov) connection between Zoetermeer and Rotterdam (ZoRo) has been the missing link in South Holland. "In order to make both existing homes and jobs and the new homes at Bleizo-West, Zoetermeer and the region easily accessible by ov, it is important that the connection between Zoetermeer and Rotterdam is improved," states mobility alderman Frinking in the launched video.

By public transport you travel from Zoetermeer to Utrecht about as fast as to Rotterdam, while Rotterdam is three times as close. "If you really want people to choose ov, you do have to have a good ov connection in all directions," stated Alderman Frinking. "I understand that a lot of money is needed for a rail connection, especially if we don't want more and longer traffic jams on the N470, N209, A12 and A13. All those hours of delay also cost road users and businesses time and money."

Good ov needed for new housing

"A faster connection between Zoetermeer and Rotterdam is needed to make possible the more than 10,000 new homes to be built in the city plus another 5,000 homes and business activity on Bleizo-West," states Alderman Weerwag (Spatial Planning, Housing and Bleizo-West). "We can accommodate the mobility growth with good ov."

Good for the regional economy

"A fast ZoRo connection strengthens the economy and earning power of the entire region," said Alderman Iedema (Economy). "This will connect the labor market of Zoetermeer to that of Rotterdam and provide a good connection between the campuses. Moreover, the regional economy such as the logistics sector can grow further if we relieve the roads."

In addition to the ZoRo connection, Zoetermeer is also committed to improving public transport with Leiden to create a fast connection between the north and south of the province of South Holland. The municipality of Zoetermeer will continue discussions with neighboring municipalities, the Metropoolregio Rotterdam den Haag (MRDH) and other involved parties to work together for good public transport.
