Recommendation for reappointment of mayor

Last night, January 19, 2026, during an extraordinary council meeting, the municipal council of Zoetermeer decided to recommend Michel Bezuijen for reappointment as mayor of Zoetermeer. This recommendation follows a careful procedure by the municipal council's confidential committee and closed deliberations.

In July last year, Mayor Bezuijen enthusiastically announced his availability for a second term as mayor of Zoetermeer. He responds to the council's recommendation:
"I am grateful for the confidence that the municipal council has placed in me with its recommendation for a second term as mayor of Zoetermeer. Zoetermeer is a city that inspires me every day. It is a great privilege for me to continue building a safe, liveable and future-oriented city in the coming years, together with the council, the municipal executive, civil servants, residents and partners."

The municipal council's recommendation is sent via the King's Commissioner in South Holland to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The mayor can then be reappointed by Royal Decree. The second term will commence on October 1, 2026.
