Stricter Rules for Cycling in the City Center

Cycling in busy shopping districts can cause disturbances and create unsafe situations. That is why the municipality of Zoetermeer is tightening the existing rules for cycling in the Stadshart. Starting today, the following rule applies in the Stadshart: if stores are open, you must walk. With this measure, the municipality aims to ensure greater clarity, tranquility, and safety in busy shopping areas.

Stores open = walk

The basic rule is simple: when stores are open, cycling is not permitted, and cyclists must walk with their bikes. This applies to all bicycles, including regular bicycles, electric bicycles, and fat bikes.

Cycling is not permitted during the following times:

  • Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday evening (late-night shopping) from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Today and tomorrow, the city will be installing new traffic signs. In addition, message signs will be put up on July 13. The city is using these to clearly indicate where bicycling is not permitted.

Enforcement and fines

Starting today, enforcement in the Stadshart will be carried out in accordance with the new regulations. Anyone who does not follow the rules may be fined.
