Dredging work on the Broekwetering is halfway complete

Dredging of the Broekwetering is proceeding smoothly, and the project is now halfway complete. The side channels and small harbors have already been completed. So far, approximately 20,000 of dredged material has been removed, out of a total of 43,000. Dredging is expected to be completed in June 2026.

Planning

The wide section of the Broekwetering near the drawbridge still needs to be dredged, and this work will begin in April. The dredging will be carried out using a crane mounted on a pontoon. This may cause some disruption to boat traffic.

Where does the dredged material go?

Most of this dredged material is processed at a storage site in the Zoetermeerse Meerpolder. Once the dredged material has dried sufficiently, it is used at the same location to raise the elevation of lower-lying areas. A small portion of the dredged material was found to be unsuitable for reuse and was therefore hauled away by truck.
