Last Thursday, April 4, was the first meeting of the Zoetermeer Citizens' Council on Waste. The citizens' council consists of a group of 150 residents who were drawn by lot according to age, gender, education and the neighborhood where they live. The citizens' council is actually "Zoetermeer in miniature.

Important topic

Alderman Bouke Velzen welcomed the participants on behalf of the College of Mayor and Aldermen: "The College of Mayor and Aldermen finds it very important to include the opinion of residents. Especially on the subject of waste policy which was the subject of another referendum in 2022. An important topic, especially in the context of sustainability. We desperately need the help of residents to be able to further shape the waste policy for the city."

A citizens' meeting

The citizens' council meets in 5 meetings where participants discuss waste with each other and with experts. During the first meeting the participants got to know each other, were updated on the current waste policy and came up with their first ideas and wishes. At the next meeting, the citizens' council will primarily discuss topics of their own choosing with experts and each other. The meetings will take place between early April and the end of June.

Important advice for the City Council

At the end of the last meeting in June, the citizens' council prepares weighty opinions for the college and city council. This opinion is presented to the College and City Council at the end of the last meeting.
