First residents receive keys to their new apartments at Zalkerbos in Meerzicht

On April 16, the first residents received the keys to their new apartments on Zalkerbos in Meerzicht from Alderman Véronique Frinking (Meerzicht Area Development) and Ellen van der Plas (VDP Vastgoed). This marks yet another important milestone in the development of the Meerzicht neighborhood. Zalkerbos (Ikaros) is one of 14 locations designated by the city council for housing construction to meet the high demand for housing in the city. The residential building is a private initiative of VDP Vastgoed.

Contribution to a balanced housing supply

The addition of 54 private-sector rental units represents a concrete step toward implementing the municipality’s policy to better balance the housing supply in Meerzicht. Through the Meer voor Meerzicht 2035 program and the Housing Vision 2024-2028, the municipality is committed to adding mid-range rental, private-sector rental, and owner-occupied homes. This is intended to contribute to improved mobility and enhance the quality of life in the neighborhood.

Councilor Véronique Frinking is proud of this development and emphasizes the importance of new construction within the Meer voor Meerzicht program: "The Meerzicht neighborhood is building for the future. The completion of these homes is another great step in the neighborhood’s continued development. By attracting new demographics and offering seniors the opportunity to transition from a single-family home to a rental apartment, we are truly revitalizing the neighborhood’s housing market. In addition to new construction, there is also a focus on a comprehensive neighborhood approach to sustainability, more green spaces, safety, and better connections among residents. This ensures that Meerzicht remains a great place to live, for both current and new residents."

Ellen van der Plas (VDP Vastgoed) adds: "We are proud to be partnering with the municipality of Zoetermeer to build this beautiful, sustainable residential complex for a wide range of residents, including first-time buyers and those looking to move up the property ladder. In this way, we are doing our part to make living in Meerzicht a reality. We wish all the new residents every happiness in their new homes."

Diverse group of residents

The apartment complex comprises 54 private-sector units and is suitable for first-time buyers, those moving up the housing ladder, and seniors. The units are built to be sustainable, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient. The complex is home to a diverse group of residents, including seniors who have sold their single-family homes, first-time buyers taking their first step into the housing market, and those moving up the housing ladder to a more spacious rental unit. In April 2026, all new residents will receive the keys to their apartments.
