Birth locks for children from Oosterheem
In Oosterheem, on the island in the Heem Canal, there has been a special work of art since 2013: Birthmark by artist Hans van Houwelingen. This eleven-meter high tower with a staircase around it has a special meaning for the residents of Oosterheem. Birthmarks hang from the artwork. 'It is a monument to everyone born in this neighborhood. The monument grows as time passes," according to artist Hans van Houwelingen.
A padlock of your own
Because of the Heemdag in Oosterheem on September 6, 2025, the municipality of Zoetermeer is again issuing birth padlocks. Children who were born in Oosterheem, or whose parents or caregivers lived here during birth, can attach a clasp with their first name and date of birth to the artwork. All children who do not yet have a clasp attached can attach a clasp with their first name and date of birth to the artwork. Each new clasp makes the artwork a little more full and meaningful.
A lasting tribute to your baby
For parents of a stillborn child, or of a child who died later, a clasp can be engraved and hung as a tangible reminder of the short but precious life. The clasp can be inscribed with the first name, date of birth and date of death. This creates a place of love, sorrow and connection, a silent gesture that says: you were there, you belong, and you remain in our hearts forever.
To register
From Aug. 22 to Oct. 1, 2025, you can request a free birth padlock (maximum 5 children per request). To do so, fill out the form on the Zoetermeer Engraving Service website: www.zoetermeersegraveerservice.nl. After applying, you will receive a confirmation. Keep this well: you will need it to pick up the padlock at the Zoetermeer Engraving Service, Velddreef 173, 2727 CE in Zoetermeer.
During the Heemdag celebration on September 6, you can hang the lock on the Birthmark artwork. Of course this may also be done at a later time. Note: Please do not throw the keys of the lock into the water. Do you need a padlock with Braille? If so, please email kunstprojecten@zoetermeer.nl.
