Change usage surname

Are (were) you married? Or have you (had) a registered partnership? Then you can ask to change the use of your last name. Your own surname will not change. It is about how you want the government to address you.

You can choose from:

  • only your own surname
  • only your partner's last name
  • your partner's last name followed by your own last name
  • your own last name followed by your partner's last name

Note! This is different from changing your last name. More information on this can be found in the Name Change Surname product.

How does it work?
  • You can submit a name change online only (see 'Arrange online').
  • Your name usage will be recorded in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). As a result, other government agencies are also aware of how you want to be addressed. You must inform other institutions and companies about this yourself.
  • Your passport, identity card or driver's license will always bear your own last name. However, you can have your partner's last name on these documents.

Note! Are you getting married soon so you are not officially married yet? Then you cannot change the use of the name yet. You can change your name after the wedding date.
