Jacques van der Meer receives Chapeau statue for sustainable thinking and sustainable action
Jacques van der Meer is no stranger to many of his neighbors. He has been committed to the residents of the Waterbuurt neighborhood for years, both buyers and tenants of the characteristic Phillips low-rise homes. In addition to being recognized as the Pearl of Meerzicht, on Thursday, January 29, he received the Chapeau statue from Alderman Bouke Velzen on behalf of the municipal executive for his exceptional personal commitment to the neighborhood and his ability to connect people.
Establishment of residents' collective
More than five years ago, Jacques founded the Association of Residents' Collective for Energy Transition in Low-Rise Buildings (VBEL). Through VBEL, he initiated a new form of collaboration with residents, the municipality, and the housing association. This form of collaboration is unique. His leadership led to an innovative collaboration and an innovative process in the Netherlands. And ultimately to a unique visual quality plan for the Waterbuurt neighborhood. This plan makes it possible to make the homes more sustainable without requiring permits and while retaining their character.
Alderman Bouke Velzen: "Jacques has done something extraordinary. With enormous commitment and perseverance, he has shown what one resident can achieve. Thanks to him, the Waterbuurt now has a visual quality plan that is unique in the Netherlands. That deserves deep appreciation, and this Chapeau statuette is proof of that. The work of Jacques and VBEL has become an inspiring example for other neighborhoods and resident initiatives in Zoetermeer."
