Night bus line Zoetermeer and Leiden remains safely and sustainably connected

The night bus service between Zoetermeer and Leiden will remain available. Qbuzz will take over operations from the current operator after December 14, 2025, and will use electric buses to ensure sustainable and reliable travel.

Qbuzz is the concession holder for public transport in North South Holland. This means that the night service will be integrated into the regional timetable and further professionalized. The night bus runs at weekends and connects Leiden Central Station with Zoetermeer Centrum-West via Zoeterwoude and Stompwijk.

Passengers pay the standard public transport fare for a single journey. Payment can be made using an OV-chipkaart, student travel product, or contactless with a bank card.

Weekend? You can party all night long!

What does the arrival of Qbuzz mean for your journey? Here are the key features:

  • The fare is the standard public transport rate.
  • N40 will be the new number for the night bus line (previously 800).
  • Electric buses for sustainable travel.
  • Extra attention to safety through the deployment of security guards.
  • Current departure times from December 19 can be found via Google, the 9292 app, and the NS app.
  • Better connections to night trains to Amsterdam and The Hague.
  • Travel is also possible with a student public transport pass or public transport chip card.

Alderman Véronique Frinking (mobility) believes it is important that Zoetermeer and Leiden remain safely connected at night: "This collaboration will not only maintain the nighttime connection between Zoetermeer and Leiden, but will also make it more sustainable and safer. This is an important step toward reliable accessibility in the region."

Jan Vink, director of the South Holland North concession, adds: "Qbuzz also takes passengers to their destinations during the night. In collaboration with our partners, we keep the region accessible to everyone, even at night."

Future

Qbuzz will operate the night bus service until at least 2026. The municipality intends to continue the partnership beyond 2026. Given the recent increase in passenger numbers, Qbuzz's takeover of the service is expected to further strengthen this trend. A final proposal will follow in the second quarter of 2026.
