New locks for Bossenbuurt for better water quality

On March 2, the Rijnland Water Authority and the municipality of Zoetermeer reflected on the major work carried out in the Bossenbuurt park in Zoetermeer. Among other things, new ditches have been dug in the Bossenbuurt in recent months. This is a measure to improve water quality. In addition, a new island has been created in the middle of the new ditches, which will be designed for walkers, and new walking and cycling paths have been constructed.

Improving water quality and green design go hand in hand

The visit kicked off at the Buitenbeest play farm, where local residents could pick up a treat and get more information about the work. After that, Alderman Marijke van der Meer opened the new bridge to the island. Marijke van der Meer: "The work has had a major impact on the Bossenbuurt neighborhood and requires a lot of patience from local residents. I am therefore delighted that today we are getting a first impression of how beautiful the new layout of the park will be."

Hans Schouffoer then presented two mulberry trees to the municipality of Zoetermeer and the residents of the Bossenbuurt neighborhood on behalf of the Rijnland Water Board: "The mulberry trees that we are planting today together with the municipality symbolize the fruitful collaboration between Rijnland and the municipality. They contribute to both the water quality and the green design of the neighborhood. The trees can live for more than 100 years. Who knows, in a few years' time, someone might be making jam or jelly from the mulberries."

Completion of work in Bossenbuurt

Rijnland is digging new wide ditches on the north side of Westerpark and in the Bossenbuurt neighborhood. Work in Westerpark will be completed by the end of 2024; in the Bossenbuurt neighborhood, work will continue until the summer of 2026. This work is part of Ons Blauwe Goud (Our Blue Gold), the joint program of Rijnland and the municipality of Zoetermeer to improve water quality in Zoetermeer.
