Polluted ditch water near Van Tuyllpark Again

Contaminated surface water has once again been detected around Van Tuyllpark and Edisonstraat. During work on the sewer system, high pressure built up in the sewer. This triggered an overflow, causing contaminated sewage to flow into ditches and ponds.

Avoid contact with water

As a precaution, the municipality of Zoetermeer and the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Board (HHSK) advise residents and visitors to the area around Edisonstraat, Franklinstraat, Oostweg, Australiëweg, Van Tuyllpark, and part of Oosterheem to avoid contact with surface water.

Until further notice, the following applies:

  • Avoid contact with water
  • Do not let dogs swim in the water
  • Do not let children play in or near the water
  • Do not use this water to irrigate sports fields

The drinking water supply will not be affected. There is no risk to the drinking water supply.

Investigation into the cause

This involves an overflow in the same area as the one earlier this year. At that time, two overflows were closed off. It has since come to light that there is another overflow that was previously unknown.

Part of the sewer system was built in the 1970s. At that time, information about the sewer system was not yet fully documented. That is why an investigation is now underway to determine the exact location of this overflow, so that it can be sealed off.

Measures

To prevent further spread, the contaminated area has been cordoned off. In addition, the water system is being flushed. This may cause temporary odor issues. Although this can be unpleasant, the odor poses no health risk.

Water quality and water levels are monitored at several locations. Warning signs are also being posted in the area.

Sports and recreation clubs affected by the temporary inability to use surface water will be notified directly.
