Step into the Escape Caravan and experience what it's like to have low literacy skills
Would you like to know what it’s like to have low literacy skills? Then hop aboard the green “Escape Caravan” for free—it will be parked in the Stadshart on Saturday, September 5. You’ll be challenged to play an escape room game that shows you just how difficult things can be when you can’t read, write, do math, or use a computer well. Previous visitors have called the experience a “real eye-opener.”
After completing the escape room, you can talk with staff members at the library in Zoetermeer. They’ll explain how to recognize low literacy and bring it up for discussion, as well as what resources are available for people who want to improve their basic skills.
The Escape Caravan is an initiative of the municipality of Zoetermeer in the lead-up to Reading and Writing Week, which begins on Tuesday, September 8. Through the Escape Caravan, the municipality aims to raise awareness about how to recognize low literacy and how to help someone with limited basic skills.
In the Netherlands, more than 3 million people struggle with one or more basic skills. This includes both people who are new to the Netherlands and those who were born here. If you do not have a good command of these basic skills, it can affect your work, health, finances, and your ability to handle matters with the government.
