Water Quality in Van Tuyllpark and Zoeterhage Back to Normal Levels

The water quality of the ditches and ponds in Van Tuyll Park and the Zoeterhage industrial area has returned to normal. Recent measurements show that the pollution has disappeared. The previous advisories to avoid contact with surface water are no longer necessary.

The municipality of Zoetermeer and the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Board have been working closely together over the past few weeks to identify the cause, resolve the issues, and restore water quality. Repair and cleanup work on the stormwater system and the affected ditches has now been completed. Continuous measurements have been taken at multiple locations to monitor changes in water quality.

Recommendations Withdrawn

Now that water quality has been restored, the precautionary measures previously issued are no longer in effect. This means that:

  • Contact with surface water is possible again;
  • Dogs can swim in the water again;
  • The surface water can be reused for watering sports fields.

Residents in the area who were previously advised by letter not to use the water due to contamination will receive a new letter stating that water quality has been restored.

Cause of Pollution in Ditch Water

During work on the Rokkeveen sewage pumping station, sewage was temporarily diverted. As a result, two unknown overflow structures were activated. Through these overflow structures, untreated sewage unintentionally entered ditches and ponds. The overflow structures have now been closed off, so that untreated sewage can no longer enter the ditches and ponds in Van Tuyllpark and the Zoeterhage industrial area.
