Starting qualification
After secondary education, students from vmbo and mavo make the transition to mbo for vocational training. Obtaining an mbo diploma is important to get a nice and well-paid job. A diploma at mbo level 2 and higher, havo or vwo is also called a starting qualification. Students from practical education often follow a route to work immediately, but some also continue to mbo.
Skipping school after the age of 18
If you are frequently absent or skip classes, the school will talk to you. If you have any questions or problems, it is wise to go to your mentor (SLB-er) yourself to make arrangements. If you continue to be absent, the school will report this to the municipality. You will usually receive a warning letter with the first report. If you are absent more often, the transfer coach may contact you by telephone or invite you to find a solution together.
If you do not comply with the agreements made, the school may deregister you after receiving a negative study recommendation from your program. This will be reported to DUO. You will then no longer be entitled to student finance or a student travel product (public transport card). Please note that you must cancel your student finance and travel product in good time via DUO. In some cases, you may even have to repay your student finance.
Early school leaving
Sometimes students drop out of their studies because it was not the right choice or because other problems arise. The school and the municipality help them to restart their education. It may also be that work is a better route. In that case, too, a combination with part-time study or study while working is considered. Schools are required to report young people who leave school without a diploma to the municipality. The municipality has a legal obligation to offer help after school dropout and will contact the young person who has stopped their education. This can be done by letter, telephone, WhatsApp, or a home visit. If you would like to bring someone with you to the meeting, you are welcome to do so.
