Birth and adoption

Birth declaration

You report the birth of your child in the municipality where the child was born.

Acknowledgement of a (unborn) child

Acknowledgeing a child, you assume legal parenthood, either before or after the child's birth and even if the child is of age.

Choosing a child's last name

For your first child, you can choose the surname yourself. You can give your child your own surname or that of your partner.

Stillborn child or deceased newborn child

If your child was born lifeless or died shortly after birth, you can make your own notice of death at City Hall. It is also possible to register your child in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP).

Denial of paternity by mother

As a mother, you can deny that your deceased husband is the father of the child. In other situations, you can sometimes deny paternity.

Adopting a child

To apply for an adoption, you submit a request to the court.
