Neighborhood Councilor Jordy Boerboom on a bike ride through Dorp
Since the summer, Jordy Boerboom has been the neighborhood alderman not only for Palenstein but also for Dorp. On Friday, September 18, he took a bike ride through the neighborhood with neighborhood director Sandra Rispens. It quickly became clear that Dorp is no stranger to the alderman. “I used to have my paper route here.” And even as a city council member, he used to help serve meals at the Morgenster nursing home. “The fact that I now get to serve as district alderman for two wonderful and very different neighborhoods is, of course, a real gift.”
First, the pair visited the vocational school. At Restaurant Proef, chef and teacher Theo van Dalen proudly showed off “his restaurant.” Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, residents can come here for a three-course lunch or a stew meal. Students from the vocational school cook and serve, learning the trade in the process. The alderman also received information about the restaurant’s “builders.” Members of the Surinamese-Hindustani community “Anwar-E-Ashrafia” created the beautiful interior design. On Sundays, the community uses the school, which is otherwise empty. This is how we help each other and the neighborhood.
Of course, the city’s oldest community center, Buurthuis Kom op, couldn’t be left out. The board proudly showcased the activities that neighborhood residents can enjoy at this community center.
Finally, the program featured a number of works of art: the apartment buildings on Ferdinand Bolstraat, painted in April, and the recently painted utility shed on Osylaan. The latter was a collaboration between residents, the municipality, and (commissioned by) Bedrijven Ondernemers Zone (BIZ Dorpsstraat). The shed, painted by artist Tobias Becker Hoff, serves as a beautiful gateway to the “ Dorpsstraat,” according to a proud Jan de Ruyter.
