Zoetermeer special officers officially begin using short batons
The special investigative officers (BOAs) of the municipality of Zoetermeer officially began using the short baton on September 25. Mayor Michel Bezuijen was present for the occasion and spoke with the officers about their work and safety on the streets.
Enhancing Safety
In May 2026, the Ministry of Justice and Security granted permission to permanently add the short baton to the equipment of Zoetermeer’s special enforcement officers. Mayor Michel Bezuijen emphasizes the importance of the short baton for the safety of law enforcement officers: “After years of advocacy, it’s great that our special enforcement officers can now actually start using the short baton. The baton is an important tool that contributes to the safety of our special enforcement officers and helps them protect themselves in threatening situations.”
Years of dedication
In 2021 and 2022, Zoetermeer participated in the nationwide pilot program for the short baton. The municipality then worked to obtain approval for its permanent implementation. With its official introduction, that process is now complete.
