Exemption for people with mobility impairments ( Zoetermeerders ) who rely on bicycles.

For some residents, a bicycle is an important means of getting around independently. Walking is difficult for them, but they are able to cover short distances by bike. The municipality of Zoetermeer believes it is important that these residents, too, can continue to participate independently in daily life. 

Cycling at times when it is normally prohibited. Under this exemption, residents with limited mobility may cycle in the pedestrian zones of the Stadshart and the “ Dorpsstraat ” at times when cycling is normally not permitted. The exemption applies between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and on Fridays during late-night shopping between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. On Sundays, cycling in the “ Dorpsstraat ” is permitted all day, even without an exemption.

Who is eligible for the exemption?

The exemption is intended for residents of Zoetermeer who, due to a physical disability, have difficulty walking and rely on a bicycle to travel short distances and access services.

To allow the application to be reviewed, the applicant must include a valid disability parking permit or a statement from a medical specialist.
Residents must apply for the exemption online. When applying, they can choose their preferred payment method. Those who pay online will receive the exemption by mail at home after approval and do not need to visit City Hall. Those who cannot or do not wish to pay online can pay for the permit after it is approved and pick it up at City Hall.

Applicants can also choose to have a sticker placed on their vehicle. The sticker makes it easier for enforcement officers to see that the cyclist has an exemption.
